There are persistent partial-truths that are emailed around the world for years. Signs and symptoms of a stroke are one.

Medical experts caution that the standard FAST test is the best.

Emails tout STR and the “new fourth test”.

STR stands for “Smile / Talk / Raise both Arms,” and the “new fourth test” is “stick out your tongue.”‘

The best advice is IF IN DOUBT, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY! Time is of the utmost concern in dealing in strokes.

 

FAST 911:

 

FACE:

Ask the person to smile.

Does one side of the face droop?

ARMS:

Ask the person to raise both arms.

Does one arm drift downward?

SPEECH:

Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase.

Is their speech slurred or strange?

TIME:

If you observe any of these signs,

call 9-1-1 immediately
